GTX 260 is better than the 4850. Hell, it’s even better than the 4870. But, the 4890 is slightly better than a GTX 260.

The ATI 4850 was released as a direct competitor to the GTX 260. Depending on the game, program or system setup the graphics performance will be close, with the GTX inching ahead in performance most of the time. Performance will also depend on the version of the card you get, overclocked or not, 512mb or 1g of memory.On the other hand, I have heard of a lot of complaints with Nvidia drivers and card reliabilty, I haven’t heard of nearly as many problems with the ATI cards. The ATI cards are also generally lower priced. I used to be an Nvidia fanboy, but recently have had problems of my own with Nvidia drivers and Windows Vista, so at this point I would reccomend an ATI card if you are running Vista.
P.S. The 4850 is an awesome card, I recently installed one in my girls computer. It plays everything no problems.
Edit: yes it will play sims 3
