What to look for in your new set of DJ decks

A great set of DJ decks is undoubtedly the most important piece of DJ equipment you need to set up as a professional DJ. For those who are just starting out as a DJ, however, it might not be clear exactly what you should be looking for in a set of DJ decks.

Generally speaking, you will spend most of your DJ equipment budget on your DJ decks. Also, all other devices and accessories you buy will feed into your turntables. This is why it’s so important to buy the best quality turntables you can afford, making sure you opt for a brand with a sound reputation for creating durable products.

The type of DJ decks you buy depend on what type of DJ you are – vinyl, CD or digital. Of course, some professional DJs with a large amount of equipment incorporate more than one of these into their sets.

If you plan to become a vinyl DJ, you will need to choose between direct drive and belt drive DJ decks. The first of these is generally considered to be the best, as belt drive turntables can eventually stretch and distort the sound of the vinyl. Digital DJs, on the other hand, will need a fast, high-powered music-focused laptop, as well as a midi controller and other time-coded systems.

Most CD DJs, on the other hand, generally use DJ decks from the Pioneer CDJ range. For beginners, the best options are the solid and reliable Pioneer CDJ 800 and 1000 models. If you are a little more ambitious or experienced, however, the more recently released Pioneer CDJ 2000 model could be the ideal choice.

At the bottom of your shopping list, but still very important, are DJ accessories such as needles and cartridges. These should come with your DJ decks, but it’s important to have spares handy.
